What to do in an emergency?

In an emergency, your priority is to stay calm and respond quickly to protect the safety and wellbeing of the participant. Carers are expected to act promptly, follow safe procedures and provide support within the scope of their training. A calm and appropriate response can help reduce risk, ensure the participant receives timely care and maintain a safe environment for everyone involved.

 

Emergency Response Steps

1. Check Safety First

Before taking action, assess the situation and make sure the area is safe.

  • Stay calm
  • Remove any immediate hazards
  • Keep the participant safe
  • Provide first aid within the scope of your training

 

2. Call 000 Immediately If:

Contact emergency services without delay if the participant is experiencing any serious or life-threatening condition, including:

  • Severe bleeding
  • Unconsciousness or unresponsiveness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • A seizure lasting more than 5 minutes
  • Suspected fracture or head injury
  • Any life-threatening situation

 

3. Stay With the Participant

Continue to support the participant until help arrives or the situation is resolved.

  • Reassure them and remain calm
  • Maintain their dignity and privacy
  • Do not leave them alone
