FAQ
What are the three ways I can manage my NDIS funding?
The three options are:
Self-managed – You manage your own funding, pay providers yourself, and claim reimbursement from the NDIS portal.
Plan-managed – A registered plan manager pays providers for you and handles invoices and financial reporting.
NDIA-managed – The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) pays registered providers directly on your behalf.
Each option offers different levels of control, flexibility, and administrative responsibility.
Which option gives me the most flexibility in choosing providers?
Self-managed gives the most flexibility because you can use both registered and unregistered providers and negotiate prices.
Plan-managed also allows you to use registered and unregistered providers, but the plan manager handles the payments.
With NDIA-managed, you can only use NDIS-registered providers.
Do I have to handle invoices and paperwork myself?
It depends on the management type:
Self-managed: Yes, you handle invoices, payments, and claims.
Plan-managed: No, your plan manager handles invoices, payments, and budget tracking.
NDIA-managed: No, the NDIA pays providers directly.
Does a plan manager cost me money from my budget?
No. If you choose plan management, the cost of the plan manager is separately funded by the NDIS, so it does not reduce your core support budget.
Can I change how my NDIS funding is managed later?
Yes. You can request changes during:
Your NDIS plan reassessment/review, or
By contacting the NDIA if your circumstances change.
Some people also use a combination of management types across different budget categories.
Which option is best for someone who doesn’t want to manage finances?
Many participants choose plan-managed because it:
Removes administrative work
Allows access to more providers than NDIA-managed
Provides financial tracking and support
It’s often seen as a balance between flexibility and convenience.
