Positive Behaviour Support

A person-centred approach to support people who have difficulties in communicating their needs and feelings and who may show behaviours that are challenging or risky for themselves or others.

We work with each person and their family or carers to create a behaviour support plan that includes strategies to prevent, reduce and respond to challenging behaviours. We also teach new skills and make changes in the environment to improve the person’s quality of life and social inclusion.

An approach that recognises and respects autistic individuals as they are. Rather than trying to change autistic traits, we focuses on understanding each person’s strengths, communication, sensory needs and preferences.

The goal is to create supportive environments where individuals feel safe, valued and empowered to thrive as their authentic selves.

FAQ

How does a Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP) work?

A Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP) is developed after a comprehensive assessment of the participant’s needs, strengths, and triggers. It outlines:

  • Preventative strategies

  • Skill-building supports

  • Environmental adjustments

  • Safe and ethical response strategies

The plan is tailored to the individual and regularly reviewed to ensure it remains effective and aligned with their goals.

A qualified Behaviour Support Practitioner develops the plan in consultation with the participant, their family, carers, and support team. As a registered provider under the NDIS, our trained support workers implement the strategies outlined in the plan and collect data to monitor progress and outcomes.

Behaviours of concern are actions that may place the person or others at risk, limit participation in everyday activities, or impact quality of life. In PBS, we don’t view behaviour as “bad” instead, we seek to understand what the person is communicating and identify unmet needs, environmental triggers, or skill gaps contributing to the behaviour.

How are families and carers involved in Positive Behaviour Support?

Families and carers play a vital role in PBS. They are actively involved in assessment, goal setting, and reviewing strategies. Collaboration ensures that support approaches are consistent across home, community, and other environments, leading to better and more sustainable outcomes.

Support workers receive training in PBS principles, understanding behaviours of concern, proactive strategies, de-escalation techniques, and safe response practices. As a provider operating within the NDIS framework, we ensure our team maintains ongoing professional development and competency in line with national standards.
